VLE Online Assignments and Assessments

1). Are practice quiz marks considered for assignments?

  • No. Practice quiz marks are not considered for calculating assignment marks of the final result.

  • By answering the practice quizzes after referring a lesson, you can decide, whether you have understood the lesson properly or not.

2). VLE Assignments & the Online Assessments, are these same or not?

  • No.

  • VLE Assignments and Online Assessments are two different evaluation methods used in the BIT Programme.
  • For more details, refer to the "Online examination criteria" given in the VLE online courses and on the BIT website.

3). What is an Enhancement Course? How is an enhancement course evaluated? 

  • It is a Non-GPA, but compulsory course.

  • The courses started with “EN” code refers to the enhancement courses.

  • There are five enhancement courses collectively in all three Levels of the  BIT Programme.

  • There are 2 Enhancement courses in Level I.

  • There is another enhancement course in Level II.
  • There are 2 more Enhancement courses in Level III.

  • It is a must to obtain a “Pass” grade for each of these Enhancement courses, in order to obtain the Diploma or Higher Diploma or the BIT Degree.

  • The five Enhancement courses are given below.

Level I Enhancement Courses: EN1106 (Introductory Mathematics), EN2106 (Communication Skills)

Level II Enhancement Courses: E3106 (Communication Skills II)

Level III Enhancement Courses: EN5101 (Fundamentals of Management), EN6502 (Introduction of Entrepreneurship) (until 2021)

EN5106 (Fundamentals of Management and Entrepreneurship), EN6106 (Advanced Concepts in Information Technology) (with effect from 2022)

  • The final examination of an enhancement course consists of two compulsory components: the written examination and the online assessment. You should pass both components in one sitting.

  • The passing score of each component is 50%.

  • Marks of any of these components will not be released separately will not be able to carry forward for the next year.

4). What is an online assessment?

  • An online assessment is a compulsory component that you must pass, in order to obtain a “Pass” grade for an enhancement course.

  • The online assessment of an enhancement course will be available after the written examination of the particular course and will be published in the BIT VLE.

  • It will be available for two weeks after the written examination.

  • You must pass the online assessment in order to pass the enhancement course.

  • It will be activated only for the students who have applied for the semester examination of a particular enhancement course.

  • The passing score of the online assessment is 50%.

5). What is the duration of the online assessment?

  • Online assessment will be available for two weeks and will be given only one attempt. Students can access and submit the online assessment at  any time within the given two weeks of time. The exact dates of the online assessment will be published on the BIT website and the VLE. The students are highly advised not to wait until the last moment to submit, because network congestion will interrupt the submission.

6). What is the passing score of the final examination of an Enhancement Course?

  • The passing score is 50%.

  • You should obtain at least 50% from the online assessment and 50% from the written examination, in order to successfully pass the Enhancement course examination.

7). How can I know the result of the online assessment?

  • Online assessment results are not published and only the final grade will be published in the BIT website.

  • It will be published in the BIT Website as a final examination result of the particular course, at the time of releasing the semester results.

  • Only the final grade will be published in results in the BIT Website. The marks or grades of individual components (written examination and online assessment) will not be released.

8). I sat for the written examination of an Enhancement Course. But I missed the deadline of the online assessment. How can I complete the examination of the course?

  • You have to attempt both online assessment and the written examination, the next year.

  • Marks of the written examination will not be carried forward to the next year.

9). Can I edit my submission after submitting the online assessment?

  • Once you clicke the “Submit all and finish” button, you will not be able to edit your submission.

  • There is only one attempt for the online assessment.

10). What is an online assignment?

  • An Assignment is a set of MCQ questions published in the BIT VLE.

  • There are two online assignments for all courses in the first four semesters (Level I and Level II).

  • Successful completion of the assignment component is compulsory to be eligible for the Diploma in IT and Higher Diploma in IT respectively in Level I and Level II.

11). What is the best way of answering questions in Assignments?

  • Proper study of all the relevant teacher’s notes and other relevant resources and trying all practice quizzes and activities prior to the assignment will be the best to answer questions in assignments.

  • Without properly studying; it is really hard to answer the assignment questions.
  • Some conditions are applied & introduced to avoid random guessing.

  • For example, one cannot get any marks by clicking all five choices. Although negative marking scheme is there, the minimum mark for a question is zero. Therefore, wrong answers will not affect other questions.

  • Students will be able to see their replies, only soon after attempting the assignment quiz. (We have implemented some controls to avoid bad practices).

12). What is the criterion to complete the VLE (LMS) online assignments satisfactorily for a given level?

  • You should obtain at least 40% for each online assignment of a GPA course and at least 50% for Enhancement (non-GPA) courses.

  • There are two online assignments in a course.

  • You should obtain at least 40% for assignment 1 and also 40% for assignment 2, in order to get a “Pass” grade for the online assignment component of a GPA course.

  • You should obtain at least 50% for assignment 1 and also 50% for  assignment 2, in order to get a “Pass” grade for the online assignment component of an Enhancement (non-GPA) course.

  • An assignment has 3 attempts and the highest score will be considered for grading.

13). Do I have to complete both assignments, in order to pass the online assignment component of a course?

  • Yes, you have to pass both assignments in one sitting to pass the online assignment component of a course.

14). How many attempts are given to complete an online assignment?

  • You have 3 attempts.

  • Since the highest score is considered as the grading and it is good for your practice, you are encouraged to attempt all three attempts.

15). We can review our assignments soon after the completion. But when we closed it, there's no option to review it again. Why can't we review our assignment questions more than once?

  • The marks of the assignments are considered to obtain the diploma/higher diploma. Therefore, we cannot allow you to review your assignments except immediately after your attempt.

16). What are 'grades' in assignments?

  • If you have scored at least 40% for each assignment of a GPA Course, you will get a “Pass” grade; otherwise, you will get a “Fail” grade.

  • If you have scored at least 50% for each assignment of an Enhancement (non-GPA) Course, you will get a “Pass” grade; otherwise, you will get a “Fail” grade.

  • An assignment has 3 attempts and the highest score will be considered for grading. (We advise students to try all three attempts irrespective of marks since it is a good preparation exercise).

17). I completed only the assignment 1 of a GPA Course and obtained more than 40%. Why does the Grade show as “FAIL” in my Gradebook?

  • You should obtain at least 40% for each assignment (assignment 1 and assignment 2), in order to obtain a Pass Grade for the online assignment component of a GPA course.

  • Even though you have gained at least 40% for assignment 1, the Grade is still FAIL. Once you complete both assignments and gain at least 40% for each assignment, the Grade will be displayed as PASS.

  • It is the same in Enhancement Courses, but the passing score is 50%.

18). How can I know the result of the online assignments?

  • The result of the online assignments will be available in your Gradebook in the VLE.

  • In order to find "Grades" in BIT VLE, first click the drop-down list at the top-right corner of the screen (next to your name), and then click "Grades" in the list. Then click the relevant course to check your assignment grade.

  • The Final Grade of the assignments will be displayed as “FAIL” until you try both assignments. Therefore, once you complete both assignments, please check your final assignment grade in the Gradebook.

  • The final results of online assignments will be published on the BIT website (under the "Online assignment Result" column), at the time of releasing the exam results of the semester.

  • If you have already passed the VLE online assignments of a course in a previous year, even though you have tried the assignments again this year, your latest result will not be published this year.

19). Can I discuss VLE assignment question in the forums?

  • No, student should not post assignment question (MCQs) directly with possible choices in the discussion forums of relevant courses.

20). I passed the VLE assignment of a course last year. But my subject is repeated. Do I need to re-do the assignment again?

  • No. You need to repeat only the subject.

21). What happens when a VLE assignment question is wrong?

  • We have a policy, not to penalize students when a question is wrong. At the same time, students will not be subjected to any discrimination if they show mistakes or make a complaint. It is rarely possible that content or questions in a particular course may be wrong. If you find such errors, please inform the relevant e-facilitator by private messaging via VLE. Please note that it is forbidden to post such assignment inquires in the discussion forums.
